Precautions After Breast Surgery
- Showering: You may shower on the day of surgery, but securely cover the surgical area with waterproof tape and keep the incisions dry. If the incisions get wet, gently blot them with a clean tissue and dry thoroughly using a hair dryer on the cool setting. You may resume normal showering once the incisions have fully healed, approximately one week after surgery, or the day after your stitches are removed.
- Sexual activity: Avoid forceful touching or squeezing of the breasts for one month after surgery, as this may cause bleeding at the surgical site.
- Scar care: The incisions will be closed with stitches or Dermabond (medical skin adhesive). They will usually be mostly healed about one week after surgery. Apply the healing solution prescribed by the clinic according to the provided schedule to support healing and help minimize scar tissue formation.
- Bra: Wear the postoperative support bra as instructed by your surgeon. Adjust the strap lengths and hook positions so that the bra applies pressure evenly along the folds beneath both breasts. If the support bra or upper compression band irritates your skin, wear it over a thin cotton T-shirt or tank top to reduce irritation. Avoid underwire bras for six months after surgery to help prevent changes in breast shape.
- Upper compression band: Keep the upper compression band on continuously for the first 24 hours. Depending on your surgeon’s assessment of your recovery, you may need to wear it for approximately seven days to two months.
After you return home on the day of surgery, wear the band over a thin cotton T-shirt for the first 24 hours, as it may rub against your underarms. Starting the following day, loosen it for about five minutes every two to three hours.
Please wear the upper compression band to your first follow-up treatment appointment. - Breast support tape: The tape provides consistent pressure to help control bleeding and swelling. If it becomes very itchy, contact your patient coordinator. If it is comfortable, leave it in place until the clinic removes it during your treatment appointment.
- Alcohol and smoking: Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least one month after surgery, as they can delay wound healing and cause inflammation. Smoking also increases the risk of capsular contracture (tightening of scar tissue around the implant).
- Exercise: Avoid exercises that heavily engage the upper-body muscles, such as swimming, golf, tennis, and weightlifting, for three months. Also avoid repeatedly lifting heavy objects for three months.
- Nipple and breast sensation: Your nipples and breast skin may feel more sensitive or less sensitive than usual for approximately six months after surgery. This is normal, and changes in sensation should be monitored over six months to one year.
- Rest and nutrition: Getting enough sleep and eating nutritious meals can help support a faster recovery.
- Medication: Avoid medications containing aspirin, as they may cause bleeding.
Complications such as bleeding, infection, and inflammation may occur after surgery, and individual satisfaction with the results may vary. Please consult your doctor.
